The Coccyx: A Timeless Repository of Human Deeds

The coccyx, often referred to as the tailbone, is a part of the human body that remains indestructible until Judgment Day. It holds the secrets of human life and deeds. Dive into this article to unravel more about the coccyx, a testament to divine power.

"Every bone of the human body will decay except the coccyx bone, from it will be created on the Day of Resurrection," (HR. Al Bukhari, Number: 4935).

This hadith conceals a wondrous mystery, unfathomable by humans for centuries. However, with the advancement of science, numerous studies have substantiated this hadith with scientific evidence.

"And he presents for Us an example and forgets his [own] creation. He says, 'Who will give life to bones while they are disintegrated?' Say, 'He will give them life who produced them the first time; and He is, of all creation, Knowing,'" (Quran, Surah Yasin: 78-79).

One of the scientists who delved into the study of the coccyx was Han Spemann, a German biologist who received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1935. He discovered that the coccyx is the origin of life for all living beings. From here, embryos develop into various organs.

The process of embryo formation begins when the egg cell (ovum) is fertilized by a sperm cell (spermatozoa), forming a single cell called a zygote. The zygote then divides into two cells, continuing to divide until it forms the embryonic disc consisting of two layers.

The first layer, the External Epiblast, contains cytotrophoblasts that provide nourishment to the embryo from the uterine wall, conveying nutrients from the blood and glandular secretions of the uterine wall.

The second layer, the Internal Hypoblast, is present from the outset of embryonic development. On the 15th day, a simple layer called the primitive node appears at the back of the embryo.

From this primitive node, three major types of tissues develop: ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm.

- Ectoderm forms the skin and central nervous system.

- Mesoderm forms smooth muscle in the digestive system, skeletal muscles, the circulatory system, heart, reproductive system bones, subcutaneous tissue, spleen, and outer skin.

- Endoderm forms the lining of the digestive system, respiratory system, organs related to digestion (such as the liver and pancreas), bladder, thyroid gland (thyroid), and the auditory canal. This primitive node is what is referred to as the coccyx.

In another study, Han tried to destroy the coccyx by grinding and boiling it at a high temperature for an extended period. After turning it into fine powder, he attempted to attach it to another early-stage embryo.

The result: the coccyx remained alive and formed a second embryo on the host's body. Despite any attempts to destroy it, this bone simply could not be 'annihilated.'

Similar research was carried out by Dr. Othman al Djilani and Sheikh Abdul Majid. During Ramadan 1423 H, they subjected the coccyx to high temperatures for 10 minutes, turning it a deep black color. Subsequently, they analyzed it at the al Olaki Laboratory in Sana’a, Yemen, under the supervision of Dr. al Olaki, a professor of histology and pathology at Sana’a University.

The findings revealed that the coccyx's tissue cells remained intact. They even withstood more prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

The Coccyx: The Recorder of Human Deeds to be Revived

Furthermore, based on recent research, as highlighted by Jamil Zaini, a Southeast Asia Trainer at Kubik Jakarta, during a communal iftar event at al Azhar-Solo Baru titled "Inspiring Day; Inspiring The Spirit of Life," the coccyx records all the actions of the children of Adam from birth to death.

It records both their good and bad deeds. These actions determine the condition of the coccyx. It can be either pristine white or deeply tainted black. The more positive energy or goodness a person exudes, the cleaner their coccyx, and conversely, the more negative energy or wrongdoing, the darker their coccyx becomes.

From this, the recompense on the Day of Judgment will never be muddled. It is from the coccyx that humans will be reassembled, and they will be rewarded according to the extent of their deeds. Remarkably, this was foretold by the Prophet centuries ago.

"No part of a human body will escape decay (to dust) except for one bone: the coccyx, from it the body will be reconstituted on the Day of Resurrection," (HR. al Bukhari, Number: 4935).

A similar hadith is narrated by Imam Muslim (Number 2955): Abu Hurairah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace, and blessings be upon him, said, "Every joint of a person must perform a charity each day the sun rises: to judge justly between two people is a charity. To help a man with his mount, lifting him onto it or hoisting up his belongings onto it, is a charity. And the good word is a charity. Every step you take towards prayer is a charity, and removing harmful things from the road is a charity."

Drawing from these hadiths, Muslim scholars in the latter half of the 20th century grounded their understanding of the miraculous nature of the coccyx in the most fundamental principles of knowledge: "The coccyx is the first part to form in the fetus, commonly referred to as the primitive streak, the primary structure that develops in the third week."

"We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth. But is it not sufficient concerning your Lord that He is, over all things, a Witness?" (Quran, Surah Fussilat: 53).
