In our daily lives, we often encounter disturbances from jin, demons, or other supernatural beings at home, the workplace, or other places. Some jin may afflict humans, either themselves or others, with real manifestations such as possession, or in more subtle ways like anxiety, restlessness, loss of interest in worship, incoherent speech, unexplained pain, and other peculiar symptoms.
In such situations, we can try to ward off these disturbances by reciting verses from the Quran and taking other actions. However, there are times when reciting Quranic verses doesn't prove effective in driving them away, just as Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) experienced during his encounter with the jin on the night they listened to the Quran.
As narrated by Ibn Mas'ud, on that night, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was approached by an Ifrit jin carrying a blazing torch. There is also a belief that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encountered an Ifrit jin on the night of Isra and Mi'raj. At that moment, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) recited Quranic verses, but there was no reaction from the jin other than it getting closer.
It was then that the angel Jibril offered his help, saying, "Shall I teach you some words that, when you recite them, will cause the jin to fall prostrate and extinguish his torch?" (HR. Malik, an-Nasa'i, ath-Thabrani, and others).
The angel proceeded to teach Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) a few words. As soon as Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) recited them, the Ifrit jin immediately fell prostrate, and his torch was extinguished.
Here is the prayer taught by the angel Jibril to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) for warding off the jin:
Translation: "I seek refuge in the noble countenance of Allah, and in the perfect words of Allah that no righteous or wicked person can surpass, from the evil of what descends from the sky, and from the evil of what ascends in it, and from the evil of what is scattered in the earth, and from the evil of what comes out of it, and from the evil of the trials of night and day, and from the evil of nocturnal calamities, and from the evil of every envious one except for an envious one who brings good, O Most Merciful."
Thus, this is the prayer taught by the angel Jibril to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). May we find blessings in this prayer, especially when faced with disturbances from jin.
