Sunnah Fasting in Dzulhijjah: Schedule, Intention, and Benefits

Dzulhijjah is a special month for Muslims. In addition to being the month of hajj and Eid al-Adha, this month also has its own virtues for those who fast.

Sunnah fasting in Dzulhijjah is fasting that is done on the first days of the month of Dzulhijjah, including fasting Tarwiyah on the 8th and fasting Arafah on the 9th. Sunnah fasting in Dzulhijjah has many benefits and rewards that are extraordinary. Let's look at the explanation below.

What is Sunnah Fasting in Dzulhijjah?

Sunnah fasting in Dzulhijjah is fasting that is done on the first days of the month of Dzulhijjah, that is from the 1st to the 9th. This fasting is one of the sunnah fasts that are recommended by the Prophet SAW. In a hadith narrated by Imam Ahmad, the Prophet SAW said:

"There are no days that are greater and more beloved to Allah for doing good deeds in them than these ten days (Dzulhijjah). So increase in them tahlil, takbir and tahmid."

Sunnah fasting in Dzulhijjah also includes fasting Tarwiyah and fasting Arafah. Fasting Tarwiyah is fasting that is done on the 8th of Dzulhijjah, which is the day when the hajj pilgrims depart from Mina to Arafah. Fasting Arafah is fasting that is done on the 9th of Dzulhijjah, which is the day when the hajj pilgrims gather in the plain of Arafah to pray and supplicate to Allah SWT.

Fasting Tarwiyah and fasting Arafah have great virtues. The Prophet SAW said:

"There are four things that the Prophet SAW never left, namely fasting Ashura, fasting Arafah, fasting three days every month (Ayyamul Bidh) and praying two rak'ahs before Subuh."

"Fasting Arafah can erase sins for two years, namely one year before and one year after."

How to Intend Sunnah Fasting in Zullihajj?

The intention for sunnah fasting in Zullihajj is similar to other sunnah fasts. Here is the intention reading in Arabic and its meaning:

Nawaitu Shouma Syahri Dlilhiyyati Sunnatan Lillaahi Ta'aala.

Meaning: I intend to fast sunnah in the month of Zullihajj because of Allah Ta'ala.

For intending Tarwiyah and Arafah fasts, just replace the word "syahri" with "yawmi" which means "day". Here is the intention reading in Arabic and its meaning:

Nawaitu Shouma Yawmi Tarwiyatin Sunnatan Lillaahi Ta'aala.

Meaning: I intend to fast sunnah on Tarwiyah day because of Allah Ta'ala.

نَوَيْتُ صَوْمَ يَوْمِ عَرَفَةٍ سُنَّةً لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى

Nawaitu Shouma Yawmi 'Arafatin Sunnatan Lillaahi Ta'aala.
