As a Muslim, our desire is to read and memorize the Quran as much as possible and as proficiently as we can. However, we often find ourselves torn between two choices: Murajaah (revising memorization) or Tilawah (continuous recitation). Which one takes precedence, and which offers more significant benefits?
Murajaah Hafalan involves repeatedly revising the verses we've already memorized to prevent forgetting. On the other hand, Tilawah Khataman entails reading the Quran from start to finish sequentially. Both have their virtues and unique qualities, but which should be prioritized?
The Best Solution: Prioritizing Murajaah Hafalan
Ideally, in an ideal situation, we would allocate dedicated time for both Murajaah Hafalan and Tilawah Khataman. This way, we can excel in memorization and regularly complete recitation. However, if circumstances do not permit a balanced approach, the best solution is to prioritize Murajaah Hafalan. Two key reasons support this choice:
1. Obligation vs. Recommended Practice: Murajaah Hafalan is an obligation for those who have memorized the Quran, as Allah SWT stated, "Indeed, it is We who sent down the Quran and indeed, We will be its guardian" (QS. Al-Hijr: 9). In contrast, Tilawah Khataman is a recommended practice endorsed by the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), who said, "Whoever recites the Quran and then completes it, Allah will record for them a double reward" (HR. Ahmad). Therefore, obligation should take precedence over recommendation.
2. Murajaah Hafalan is Inclusive: Murajaah Hafalan is a form of Quranic recitation, but Tilawah Khataman does not necessarily include Murajaah Hafalan. This means that someone who recites one Juz thirty times will, God willing, receive the same reward as someone who recites all thirty Juz in one sitting. However, the latter may not necessarily revise their memorization.
What About Those Who Have Already Completed Memorization?
Individuals who have already completed memorizing the Quran may find themselves in a different situation than those still in the memorization process. Each time they engage in recitation, they automatically revise their memorization. Therefore, they can seamlessly combine both practices.
Nonetheless, they must still pay attention to the quality and quantity of their Murajaah Hafalan. It is crucial not to focus solely on Tilawah Khataman without ensuring the strength of their memorization. Therefore, they should continue to allocate specific, intensive time for revising their memorization.
In conclusion, may this article be beneficial to those seeking to strengthen their relationship with the Quran. Always remember to seek Allah's assistance for ease and blessings in reading and memorizing the Quran.
