Having a new house is a dream for many people. A new house not only shows achievement and prosperity, but also provides comfort and happiness for its occupants. However, before moving into a new house, there are some things that we should do as Muslims to make our new house a place that is full of blessings and pleasing to Allah.

Here are some ways to move into a new house in an Islamic way that we can do:

1. Be grateful to Allah

The first thing that we should do when we get a new house is to be grateful to Allah for the blessing that He has given us. Allah says:

"And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed: 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you (in favor); but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'" (Qur'an 14:7)

Being grateful to Allah can be done by saying hamdalah, praising Allah, and using His blessing for beneficial and pleasing things.

2. Hold a feast for the new house

One of the ways to express our gratitude to Allah is by holding a feast for the new house. A feast for the new house is an event where the owner of the new house invites family, relatives, neighbors, and friends to eat together. The purpose is to share happiness and blessings with the closest people.

A feast for the new house is also called al-wakirah. Some scholars highly recommend this, among them Imam Asy-Syafi'i. He said about al-wakirah:

ومنها الوكيرة، ولا أرخص في تركها

"Among the types of feast is al-wakirah. I do not allow leaving it." (Al-Mausu'ah Al-Fiqhiyah Al-Kuwaitiyah, 8/207).

3. Recite supplications when entering the new house

When entering the new house, we are advised to recite certain supplications to make our house a place that is safe, comfortable, and blessed. Here are some supplications that we can recite when entering the new house:

- Recite surah Al-Fatihah 3 times

- Recite surah Al-Mu'minun verses 28-29 as follows:

فَإِذَا اسْتَوَيْتَ أَنتَ وَمَن مَّعَكَ عَلَى الْفُلْكِ فَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلهِ الَّذِي نَجَّانَا مِنَ الْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِين * وَقُل رَّبِّ أَنزِلْنِي مُنزَلاً مُّبَارَكًا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ الْمُنزِلِين

"And when you have boarded the ship, you and those with you, then say, 'Praise to Allah who has saved us from the wrongdoing people.' And say, 'My Lord, let me land at a blessed landing place, and You are the best to accommodate (us).'" (Qur'an 18:39)

- Recite this supplication 3 times:

"Allâhumma yâ man falaqal bahra li Mûsâ bin ‘Imrân, wa najjâ Yûnusa min bathnil ḫût, wa sayyaral fulka li man syâ-a, antal ‘âlimu bi ‘adadi qathril biḫâri, wa dzarrâtir rimâl. Yâ Khâliqa ashnâfi ‘ajâ’ibil makhlûqât. As’alukal kifâyah, yâ kâfiya man istakfâh, yâ Mujîba man da‘âh, yâ muqîla man rajâh. Antal kâfi, lâ kâfiya illa anta. Ikfinî syarra ma akhâfu wa ahdzar. Wamla’ manzilî hâdzâ khairan wa barakah. Washalli ‘ala nabiyyika wa rasûlika sayyidina Muḫammadin wa âlihi wa shaḫbih wa sallim"

"O Allah who split the sea for Moses son of Imran and saved Jonah from the belly of the whale and ran the ship for whoever He willed You are the Knower of the number of drops of water and grains of sand O Creator of various kinds of amazing creatures I ask You for sufficiency O Sufficient One who suffices whoever asks Him O Answerer of whoever calls Him O Forgiver of whoever hopes in Him You are the Sufficient One there is no one who suffices except You Suffice me from the evil of what I fear and beware And fill this house of mine with good and blessing And send blessings upon Your Prophet and Messenger our master Muhammad and his family and companions and grant peace"

These supplications are recited every morning and evening for three consecutive days.

4. Maintain cleanliness and tidiness of the house

Another way to move into a new house in an Islamic way is to maintain cleanliness and tidiness of the house. Cleanliness and tidiness are part of faith. The Prophet SAW said:

الطُّهُورُ شطرُ الإِيمان

"Cleanliness is half of faith." (Muslim)

By maintaining cleanliness and tidiness of the house, we will get blessings and health. A clean and tidy house will also create a comfortable and peaceful atmosphere for its occupants. On the contrary, a dirty and messy house will cause diseases and disturbances.

5. Enliven the house with remembrance and recitation

The last way to move into a new house in an Islamic way is to enliven the house with remembrance and recitation. Remembrance and recitation are deeds that are highly recommended by Islam to be done anywhere, including at home. With remembrance and recitation, we will get closer to Allah, seek His protection, and remember His blessings.

Remembrance and recitation will also make our house a place full of light and peace. The Prophet SAW said:

لا تجعلوا بيوتكم مقابر إن الشيطان ينفر من البيت الذي تقرأ فيه سورة البقرة

"Do not make your houses like graves. Verily Satan flees from a house where surah Al-Baqarah is recited." (Muslim)

These are some ways to move into a new house in an Islamic way that we can do. We hope that with these ways, our new house will become a place full of blessings, pleasing to Allah, and happiness. Ameen.
