Maintaining Mental Health: Insights from Sheikh Ibn Ataillah Al-Sakandari

In our contemporary age, stress and anxiety have become pervasive issues, afflicting countless individuals. The modern lifestyle is fraught with various triggers such as work pressures, familial responsibilities, health concerns, financial burdens, and more. Unaddressed stress and anxiety can take a toll on our mental well-being.

Among the luminaries of Sufism, Sheikh Ibn Ataillah Al-Sakandari stands out with his seminal work "Matn Al-Hikam." This 14th-century Egyptian scholar offers practical advice within his popular treatise, guiding readers on mitigating stress and anxiety by decluttering the mind from unnecessary burdens.

Sheikh Ibn Ataillah Al-Sakandari advises against fixating on matters beyond our control, such as fate, destiny, and the future. He emphasizes that these aspects are determined by the divine will of Allah SWT, urging us to surrender to His wisdom. He eloquently states:

"Relieve yourself from excessive planning, for what others undertake on your behalf, do not burden yourself with for your own sake." (Ibn Ataillah Al-Sakandari, Al-Hikam)

The term "Tadbir" (planning or strategy), as employed by Sheikh Ibn Ataillah Al-Sakandari, signifies contemplating matters that bring benefit. This concept is further elucidated by Sheikh Zarruq, who defines it as "definitive speculation or anticipation without submitting to Allah every worry or aspiration related to the future." Sheikh As-Syarqawi, a commentator on "Matn Al-Hikam," highlights that Sheikh Ibn Ataillah Al-Sakandari intended to caution novices against obsessing over worldly matters driven by base desires and cravings. Such preoccupation can lead to distress, overthinking, or even delusion. Often, individuals expect their dreams and visions to materialize instantly, only to be met with the disparity between expectation and reality, leaving their thoughts and aspirations in vain.

Of course, this does not imply forsaking planning altogether. Prudent and rational planning (Tadbir) that facilitates the achievement of life goals while maintaining reliance (Tawakkul) on Allah SWT is commendable. It aligns with a hadith stating, "A measured plan is half of one's livelihood."

Nevertheless, excessive and obsessive planning, which spirals beyond control, carries adverse consequences. It burdens our minds, breeds toxicity, and compromises mental well-being. Hence, we must steer clear of such tendencies.

It's imperative to view and comprehend our thoughts and circumstances proportionally and sensibly. Striking a balance between facing reality without succumbing to despair or recklessness is essential. And Allah knows best.
