LISBON - History has noted that there are several countries that used to have a majority Muslim population, but now they have Muslim minorities.

It is recorded in history that the Islamic sultanate once triumphed and reached a golden era throughout the world. The influence of Islamism quickly spread to various parts of the world and began to build Islamic governments.

Of the many, there are several countries that were once controlled by Muslim civilization so that the majority of the population is also Muslim. Among these countries are Spain and Portugal.

However, history also records that after the conquest of Christianity and Catholicism, the majority Muslim population in these two countries turned into a minority.

These are 2 countries that used to have a majority Muslim population but are now a Muslim minority.

1. Spain

According to historical facts, Spain once had a very large Muslim population and became the majority. But, after the Christian and Catholic conquest there, the Muslims had lost most of their territory.

Quoted from The Conversation page, on January 2, 1492, Abdallah Muhammad bin Ali as the last Moorish Sultan of Granada surrendered his city to the Catholic Kings Ferdinand II and Isabella I.

At first, the king boasted that he would be fair to the Muslim population there. But in reality, they actually want to eliminate Islam and its culture in Spain.

The peak, in 1609 occurred the expulsion of Moriscos. The event was the expulsion of the Spanish Muslim population from the country.

2. Portugal

Not much different from Spain, Portugal also has a past history when the Muslim population was so large that it became the majority population.

Quoted from the Al Jazeera page, around the 8th century, Muslims entered from North Africa and controlled several areas that are now called Portugal and Spain.

The region was formerly known as Al-Andalus and was part of the Umayyad Empire which flourished under Islamic rule. Unfortunately, this glory has now been forgotten in the country.

After the conquest, King Manuel I decided to expel all Muslims and Jews from Portugal. After the expulsion, the mosque and synagogue were partially destroyed, while the rest was used as a church.

In addition, in Portuguese schools, the history of Islamic government that once existed and ruled for up to 5 centuries is only briefly studied.

Instead, they emphasized the triumph of conquest by Christian rulers aided by the Crusaders.
