Witchcraft in Indonesia is often perceived as sacred and respected. Many even consider shamans as saints of Allah. However, how does Islam truly view shamans and their practices?

This article delves deeper into the dangers of witchcraft and its impact on the faith of Muslims.

Witchcraft: An Ancient Misleading Tradition

Witchcraft has existed since the time of the prophets. Shamans are often revered as figures with supernatural powers and become a community’s point of reliance.

However, Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him was once a victim of sorcery by a shaman. This incident highlights that shamans are not Allah's saints but tools of devils to spread misguidance.

Islamic Ruling on Witchcraft

Islam strongly condemns shamans. The Prophet peace be upon him said:

Ù„َÙŠْسَ Ù…ِÙ†َّا Ù…َÙ†ْ تَÙƒَÙ‡َّÙ†َ Ø£َÙˆْ تُÙƒُÙ‡ِّÙ†َ Ù„َÙ‡ُ

"Whoever practices witchcraft or seeks help from a shaman is not one of us." (Narrated by Al-Bazzar)

Furthermore, visiting a shaman or believing in their words is a major sin. The Prophet stated that a person’s prayer will not be accepted for 40 nights merely for asking a shaman, and believing them is akin to disbelief in the Quran (Narrated by Muslim, Ahmad).

The Dangers of Witchcraft Practices

Here are several reasons why witchcraft is considered misleading:

  1. False claims of knowing the unseen: Shamans often claim to foresee the future, yet only Allah knows the unseen (Quran, 6:59).
  2. Propagating misguided beliefs: Shamans promote the belief in spirits’ powers, contrary to Islam's assertion that only Allah controls everything (Quran, 2:20).
  3. Promoting polytheism: Practices such as using charms, spells, or offerings are clear forms of shirk prohibited in Islam.
  4. Invoking jinn: Many shamans collaborate with jinn for purposes like wealth, business success, or revenge.
  5. Fostering conflicts: Shamans often instigate disputes by accusing others of witchcraft.
  6. Destructive magic: Some shamans perform sorcery to harm or even kill others.

The Phenomenon of Shamans in Indonesia

In Indonesia, witchcraft takes various forms. Some shamans are referred to with titles like "ustaz," "ajengan," or "kyai," despite their practices clearly violating Islamic principles. This calls for Muslims to be more vigilant and discerning to avoid being deceived by titles or appearances.

Conclusion

Witchcraft is a form of misguidance that every Muslim must avoid. In Islam, only Allah has power over all things, and seeking help from shamans equates to associating partners with Allah.

Let us strengthen our faith and continuously seek knowledge to avoid practices contrary to Islamic teachings.
