Recently, a video of a man reciting the Adhan with a unique rhythm in a mosque went viral on social media. The video mesmerized many netizens with the beautiful rhythm recited by the man.
In response to the video, the Chairman of the Muslim Art and Culture Institute (Lesbumi) of PBNU, KH Muhammad Jadul Maula, stated that the Adhan with a local rhythm would feel more grounded and in line with the cultural wisdom of each region.
"Local rhythm feels more grounded and in line with the local culture," said Kiai Jadul, as quoted by NU Online, on Wednesday (March 29, 2023).
Before the viral video, it was known that the Adhan with unique tones had already been recited in Indonesia, including in the Pathok Negoro mosques (Mataram Mosque), which has a unique Javanese rhythm in the Adhan.
"The Adhan rhythm in the mosque has variations based on prayer times. So the Fajr Adhan is different from the Dhuhr Adhan, and so on for the other prayer times," explained Kiai Jadul, who comes from Pekalongan.
According to Kiai Jadul, at the IAIN Yogyakarta mosque, which is now UIN Sunan Kalijaga, the recitation of the Adhan with a local rhythm is not only used for the Adhan but also for the recitation of the Quran.
"I heard that at the IAIN Yogya mosque in the 1970s, they still used the Javanese rhythm in the Adhan and the recitation of the Quran during prayers," he said.
Kiai Jadul explained that at that time, the Adhan with a local rhythm was not heavily debated by the community. Therefore, if there are now opposing views regarding the Adhan rhythm, he feels it is too excessive.
"I have never heard any complaints about it. And I think people who hear it must already understand the meaning and purpose of the Adhan. So there is no problem," he said.
In this regard, the Adhan with a local rhythm has been a long-standing tradition in Indonesia. The Adhan with a local rhythm can make the Adhan feel closer to the local cultural wisdom. Therefore, if made a part of the effort to preserve local culture, the Adhan with a local rhythm can be a source of pride for the local community.
Unique Way of Hawaiians in Reciting Adhan: Different but Interesting
The Twitter account @wehhAR shared a video showing a long-haired man with neatly tied hair reciting the Adhan in his unique way. It can be seen from the video that the man is standing alone on a prayer mat in a mosque in Hawaii, where the surrounding atmosphere looks like a mosque and the congregation is ready to perform prayers.
The owner of the Twitter account appeared impressed by the Adhan recitation with the unique rhythm by the man and considered it a demonstration of how diverse Islam is, stretching across every race and culture on earth.
However, some netizens did not fully agree with the Adhan rhythm recited by the man. Some of them showed confusion because the Adhan tone was quite unique and unusual, while others focused more on the difference between long and short pronunciation that affects the meaning.
Nevertheless, the unique way of Hawaiians in reciting the Adhan has proven that religion has many variations and diversities around the world, and the Adhan recited in a different way can provide an interesting and inspiring experience for others.
